A new website offering scans of video game magazines can be found here:

https://retrogamingmags.com/

Kiwi

Just another site like RetroCDN that's pilfered other sites files including our scans that were pilfered by Archive.org.

Jason

This is the same clown as SegaMagazines.com. He was hosting Sega Mania issues, a current magazine which had to cease operations because of a lack of patronage.

And he has the hide to have a Patreon!

And THAT ladies and gentlemen, is why we don't host content for currently sold magazines here!!

We might have new/current content archived (okay, not a lot yet as I've been too busy scanning) but while the publisher is making a living off selling digital copies of their mags we generally won't release them. We WANT publishers to make a living of them otherwise they discontinue producing new magazines/issues.

Unfortunately, clowns like him/her and sites like Archive.org which make pretty much any and all content available regardless of the authors/publishers are all too common.

He actually posted his website around and admitted he was previously Sega Magazines.com. I was under the impression it was Sega Mania's personal website, cataloguing old mags for preservation but I guess it's clearly more than that.  :o

You're actually correct Slider, I did some more checking and it is the same person. I'll leave my original comment up as I'll own my mistakes :) He does have every right to host those magazines at least.

Maybe for Sega Mania but with the other mags those have been sourced as the About page reads:

"Credit where Credit's due!
None of this would be possible without the hard work that many individuals have put into scanning and uploading these magazines to the internet.

We don't know exactly who uploaded what originally, but we can tell you that we sourced most of the magazines from Sega Retro and Archive.org so a big thank you to both of those sites is due for hosting them.

I have had an email chat with the site owner and I will happily state that I assumed the worst in this particular instance. All he has done is use content of ours from Archive.org which had already been pilfered by Jason Scott and his Archive.org cronies Durian/godane a long time ago so I should've cut him some slack as he wasn't to know.

I think we've grown a little toxic in our attitudes towards other sites where they don't scan their own content. I know I have, so this has been a timely reminder that not everyone does this out of spite but sometimes out of ignorance, especially if they haven't been on the scanning scene as long as we have and seen the lack of integrity of some of the people involved. That comment was aimed squarely as Jason Scott and his cronies.

Thanks Kiwi, as of yesterday I shut down Retrogamingmags.com and have started changing it into a memorial for Sega Mania using our old domain.

Echoing my email, I'd just like to let everyone here know, that my site was never a cash grab or a claim to having done the hard work of scanning, it started as a useful tool for the guys who contributed to my magazine (basically an easy web based way access to old Sega Magazines for reference) and then after I shut Sega Mania down and suddenly found myself with a load of free time I just thought it might be a bit of fun to put other stuff on there.

There was no grand plan to step on anyone's toes or oust sites such as this, it was just a bit of fun and something to keep me busy. Yes I had a Patreon but it was just if people wanted to chip in towards my time and server costs and was a "nice to have" rather than an aim to make a living.

Anyway the site is gone now as finding this place and this thread opened my eyes into the damage that's been caused by people inappropriately using scans and I don't want to be part of that. It was something I was a bit naive about to be honest.

Looking forward to checking out some of the content here. There are some mags on this site that I was a massive fan of that I haven't seen for decades so will get stuck in soon.

I'm not 100% sure if there's much I can do to contribute and help with here, but once I get my bearings I'll chip in if I am able.

Cheers,

Tim

Really nice message Tim. Glad to get your perspective on things and I admire the way you shut down the site following the chat with Kiwi. Hope you get a kick out of the magazines hosted here and welcome to our little (but obviously very passionate) community.

Speaking of Jason Scott isn't he supplying Frank Cifaldi of Video Game Foundation with scans?

Kiwi

If that's the case the only good ones they will be receiving from him are those mags they ripped off from us, OoPA and Retromags. Shitloads of other scans over there were Mort's old scans which aren't that great.

Looks like they need all the help they can get with the pace they're going. Remember these are the professionals: 😂

Honestly I was sad to see this as I found your site an excellent way to read magazines without downloading them all, you had a good viewer (although it didn't work too well on mobile).
